Notes ['An article in the magazine Suomen nainen 9/1917, pp. 152-153 says: "The American writer Louisa May Alcott isn\'t unknown for the Finns. At least a couple of her books are translated. The on called \'Best of the girls\' is known tho many young girls. I say young, because Louisa May Alcott is a writer for the young. She is one of the few that try to describe a very ungrateful period of human life, the so called \'backfisch\' age, between 12 and 17 years. That is why this try is thankful and unthankful - the first because it\'s so rear, the later because the writer needs sepcial talents of a psychologist and have to be able to take the position of the early young to succeed. How has the writer succeed, then? It seems that her love to the subject has helped her to create a book that interests us and makes us eagerly follow the development of four little women, daughters of a priest, during one year. The different characters of the girls get a coherent description. Alcott also succeeds in showing how the poor life has it\'s own joys and when you see it the right way it can be rich and interesting. Writer\'s love has helped her, as well as her lust to write to a certain, often forgotten age group.--- To know the different natures of the women doesn\'t mean that one should understand them in the right way. That\'s why there might be some impure chord. One also has to wonder the colourlessness in which the sweet mother and Mr. Brooke are pictured.-- Still, Alcott\'s book has many good sides, and it should be in many homes only because of it\'s nature that guides toward good.---".
