Jacobs wrote confidentially to Stowe proposing that she turn her account into a 2-volume narrative, 'but Stowe betrayed her by informing her employer [asking] for permission to incorporate Jacobs' story into her own current project, A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin. Rightfully indignant but even more resolved, Jacobs decided to compose the narrative herself.'
