Nicolaas Beets and Johannes Petrus Hasebroek were colleagues and friends of Kneppelhout. They were members of the 'Rederijkerskamer' and helped each other and developing and improving their poetry. Furthermore, they took inspiration from foreign Romantics such as George Gordon Byron and Victor Hugo.
