Born in Kristiania, Norway. She was the daughter of Chamberlain Peter Martin Schøyen and Elise Natalie Monrad. She lived in France, Italy, Germany, USA and Denmark. She was adopted by the Duchess of Mantua, and took thereafter the name Fyrstinde d'Este-Gonzaga.
Norwegian writer of especially historical fiction. She wrote travelogues, short stories, novels, plays and translated books from English and French.
