Unmarried, daughter of a civil servant, rather poor after the death of her father. Her health declined while in her twenties, and she spent several years in her room, for long periods in bed. An eager reader, she was unhappy because of the many restrictions which hampered her access to learning. While ill, she taught herself several languages, including Spanish. Thereafter, in 1747, she published a translation of Antonio de Solís y Rivadeneyra’s "Historia de la conquista de Méjico" (1684).
