Below information according to Norsk Forfatter-Lexikon (1888):
Born as Jakobine Sofie Gjertz in Christiania, July 13, 1819. Studied Music in Copenhagen (1837-40) and traveled to France in 1841 to continue, as a composer and pianist. Gave concerts in Cristiania, Stockholm and Malmö.
Stayed in France for several years, returned to Christiania in 1843, went to America in 1844 on an Art Travel, where she also gave concerts (New York, Philadelphia etc.).
Was married during her stay to French merchant Gabriel Bernard (1812-1857), and converted to Catholicism, adding Marie to her name.
Returned to France in 1846. The Revolution of 1848 forced her to take up music again for financial reasons, and she went on a musical tour across Europe.
After her husband's death in 1851 she started working as a music teacher in Paris, where journalist Louis Veuillot introduced her to the literary world.
Died in Sceaux, near Paris, 12-08-1862.
