Westermarck was a painter, a writer and a suffragette. Westermarck was a student in the drawing school in Helsinki 1874-1877, and after that she continued to study in the guidance of the painter Adolf von Becker until 1880. Westermarck moved to Paris in 1880 and studied in the Académie Colarossi 1880-1881 and in 1884. In Finland she worked in the feminist organization Naisasialiitto Unioni when it was founded. She also wrote essays and art reviews.
